Willow is such a versatile plant for equine properties. Studies have shown willow possess substantial abilities to suppress inflammatory pathways (including cancer). A fabulous browsing plant for horses with sore bodies (muscles, joints etc) and can handle relatively hard treatment once semi established and allowed some protection to bounce back.
While remarkable anti-obesity and anti-lipidemic effects have been discovered in Willow (resulting in reduction of adipose tissue and body weight gain) this plant is best used/access given outside of a laminitic crisis, as it may behave in some horses similar to certain pastures, lucerne etc in terms of crude protein, sugar levels, insulin release etc and may be counter productive during this time. A great addition for track systems where prevention is the focus.
Fast growing deciduous tree 12-15m tall. Very graceful, pendulous habit. Tolerates a wide range of soils but thrives in moist, semi acidic conditions in full sun - part shade. Excellent to plant around ponds/dams. Handles very well wet/boggy areas. Has some drought tolerance. Can be invasive in some areas, please avoid planting near creeks/rivers to protect waterways.
