Biennial (flowers in second year).  Likes deep, rich, moist (not wet) soil.  Full sun - part shade.  Frost tolerant, drought sensitive.  1.5-2m tall.  Slow to get going initially, but then surprisingly fast.   Space 3 feet apart
 
Can be cooked or eaten like celery (although more bitter).  Will handle mild direct browsing, but will need some protection or pick a leaf/stem and offer
